Hello! I am Chris Holm, and I teach Math, Earth Science, and Photography. I am working with Mrs. Vawter to bring your child a fun, challenging, and successful sixth grade. It was good to meet many of you at Back to School Night. For those who could not attend, a PowerPoint presentation from Principal Mrs. Girardi was sent home last week.

* Math Test. The school year is well underway, and we are progressing in our studies. We had our first math test last Thursday. Please sign your child’s test and return it so I know that you have seen it.

* Test Retakes. I allow students to improve their grade and retake tests. To retake the test, they need to first correct their mistakes (on the test sheet). Students who need help correcting their mistakes may see me during class, recess, or after school. Once the mistakes are fixed, they may retake the test during lunch recess or after school. Tests must be retaken within 2 weeks of the original test date.

* Web Portal. The web portal for seeing student grades is not yet active, but when it is, you will be able to go online and see how your child is doing in all of his or her classes.

* Earth Science. We have begun earth science last week, and are starting with learning the scientific method.

* PBL. Our earth science Project Based Learning unit will begin in the second trimester.

* Yosemite Trip. If you had not heard, the Roosevelt sixth grade is going to Yosemite! Dates are April 7-11, 2014. Please send a check or cash in now with your student for their initial deposit of $50 to reserve their spot.

* Chocolate Sales. There are two weeks left for our school’s chocolate sale. Proceeds from this sale will be used to reduce the cost of the Yosemite trip. If your child hasn’t turned in their permission slip yet, please do so tomorrow.

* Internet. If you have internet access, check my website for homework info and this newsletter (published once a month). I recommend that you sign up for the RSS feed, so you can always be instantly alerted to new homework posts and communications!
